Maximize Your Layover in Amsterdam: A Complete Guide
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is one of Europe’s busiest and most well-connected hubs, making it a common stop for travelers with extended layovers. This past October, I made the most of my 10-hour layover in Amsterdam, flying with KLM and deliberately choosing a stopover in this vibrant city. While I had a detailed itinerary prepared, spontaneity took over, and I explored unexpected parts of Amsterdam.
In this guide, I’ll share a itinerary, practical tips and insights from my layover adventure, helping you make the most of your time in the city of tulips. Whether you stick to a schedule or let curiosity lead the way, Amsterdam won’t disappoint!
Getting From Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam City Center
If you have a long layover at Schiphol, heading into Amsterdam city center is straightforward and convenient. Here’s what needs to be checked before heading out of the airport.
1. Luggage Storage
Schiphol offers secure luggage storage before or after the security screening points. I chose a storage facility near Terminal C, which cost me €8 for the day. This allowed me to explore the city hands-free.
2. Check Visa Requirements
Before leaving the airport, ensure you have the authorization to enter the Netherlands. Travelers from certain countries may need a Schengen Visa to visit Amsterdam and other European destinations.
3. Buy a Train Ticket
I bought a €10 round-trip train ticket from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal at a self-service machine near the exit. Friendly border agents pointed me downstairs to the Intercity Direct train. On the ride 15–20 minutes, you’ll enjoy scenic views of the Dutch countryside as you approach the city! Have a look !

Amsterdam City Center for Beginners
Upon arriving at Amsterdam Centraal railway station, I reunited with friends and began exploring the city. We debated between a canal boat tour or exploring on foot. Ultimately, we chose the latter.
1. Dam Square and Surroundings
We started at Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. Key attractions around the square include:
- The Royal Palace: A historical building undergoing maintenance during our visit.
- Nieuwe Kerk (New Church): A stunning 15th-century Gothic church.
- National Monument: A white stone obelisk commemorating WWII victims.
- De Bijenkorf Department Store: A haven for luxury shopping.
By mid-morning, Dam Square came alive with tourists, street performers, and bustling cafes.
2. The Canals and Red Light District
From Dam Square, we wandered aimlessly, being led by the charm of Amsterdam’s canals. We stumbled unexpectedly upon the iconic red light district. In the early morning, its streets were quiet and unassuming, blending seamlessly with the rest of the city.

The canals, covered with colorful autumn leaves, looked like scenes from a fairytale. Striking poses and taking photos along the water was a must.
A'DAM TOWER
Exploring the Amsterdam Skyline and Dining Scene
Our next stop was the A’DAM Tower, home to the A’DAM LOOKOUT – Amsterdam’s famous observatory and thrilling swing experience, located on Overhoeksplein. Just an 11-minute ferry ride from Amsterdam Centraal, the tower sits on the northern side of the IJ River. The regular ferry service, bustling with pedestrians, cyclists, and even cars, offers a convenient and free way to cross the river.
One highlight of our visit was the free audio guide, which shared fascinating insights about Amsterdam’s history—from its humble beginnings as a 12th-century fishing village to its transformation into a modern, bustling city. Historical artifacts displayed throughout the observatory added depth to the experience. One of my companions dared to try the swing over the edge, and he found the thrill well worth it. Plus, you can capture the moment with a souvenir photo.

We dined at the Secret Garden, a chic restaurant with fancy decor, delicious food, and a price tag to match. For dessert, we had pancakes. Plain ones cost €7, while garnished ones are €8. Based on our restaurant bill and dessert stop, Amsterdam is certainly on the pricier side—likely a reflection of its immense popularity.

Bloemenmarkt
On our way back to the station we pass this flower market. When you don’t have time to visit Keukenhof or the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, a market is a good alternative.
